Effective immediately, the minimum weight for Top Fuel is changed from 2,300 pounds to 2,320 pounds. A recently completed study by the NHRA Technical Department has revealed that the addition of items such as the Accident Data Recorder, the Safety Shut-off Device, parachute tethers, and improved oil-retention devices has had an impact on the minimum weight of these cars.

During this study, the weights of all Top Fuel dragsters participating in the first three events of 2011 were measured at the conclusion of a full run. Each team was also surveyed to determine the amount of ballast that it was carrying during these runs. Only in a few instances were any cars measured below the new minimum weight of 2,320 pounds.

The NHRA Technical Department is making this change in minimum weight to more accurately represent the actual weight of these cars and to help reduce costs associated with lightening components. The NHRA Technical Department will continue to monitor the weight of cars in this class and will make changes when appropriate.
