Important Annoucement Regarding Pomona National Event Hazardous Materials

The following serves as an important notice to all Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Nationals Teams.

TEAMS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FOLLOWING ALL REGULATIONS AND NHRA RULES

The State of California has 35 separate Air Quality Management Districts (AQMDs).  All of the large metropolitan area AQMDs have rules that - ban the use of solvent (mineral spirits) parts washers for cleaning and degreasing parts associated with race cars.  This ban on solvent parts washers is in place at Pomona

  • Pomona falls under the So Cal AQMD Regulations which mandates that solvents used for cleaning/degreasing race car parts be limited to 50 grams/liter of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for petroleum based cleaning solutions.

These VOC restrictions can be complied with in three different manners:

1.    Race Teams can use up to 160 ounces of aerosol (spray can) cleaners per day as long as the solvent does not contain perchloroethylene (“perc”) or trichloroethylene (“TCE)” (no air permit is needed to use aerosol cleaners);

2.    Race Teams can use an aqueous (water-based) parts washer that contains less than 25 grams/liter of VOCs - such as Safety-Kleen’s Armakleen aqueous cleaning solutions which has 0.0 grams/liter of VOCs (these aqueous parts washers often require a special parts washer that can heat the aqueous cleaning solution in order to effectively clean and degrease parts);

3.    Safety-Kleen will have Aqueous Part Cleaners in the Safety-Kleen Recycling Center located in the Pit Area at the track for all teams to use. Please refer to the attached map for the location of the Safety-Kleen Recycling Center.

Teams found in violation of the AQMD rules and procedures can be subject to fines from these agencies.  Teams are strongly encouraged to direct any questions about their specific needs or used fluids/ solvents to Safety-Kleen.
