Tuesday Tech Question

Dear NHRA Tech Department,

I was looking at replacing my fuel cell in my super gas car. Would I have to ground this fuel cell in order for it to pass tech since it’s made of plastic and has no metal to ground it?

Tuesday Tech Question Answer

Fuel Cell Fred,

The NHRA Rulebook states in General Regulations, 1:5 Fuel Systems, Tanks, “Nonmetallic fuel cells or tanks must be grounded to frame”. The fuel cell you are asking about would need to be grounded to the frame of the race car. There would be several ways to accomplish this such as; making metal straps to secure the tank that are attached to the frame, making a wire that could be glued to the cell on the one end and the other grounded to the frame, etc.

Thank You,

NHRA Technical Department
